Giving a new definition to Bollywood romance and college rivalry, Dia Mirza and Madhavan’s romantic offering ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ completes 20 years today, October 19. Over the decades, its music, dialogue and general air of timeless romance have grown even more so. Popular. Released in 2001, RHTDM debuted Dia Mirza and Madhavan and was directed by Gautham Menon, and boasted some memorable moments by Harris Jayaraj. Produced by Pooja Entertainment, the film was a remake of the director’s own Tamil film Minnale which also starred Madhavan. The simple story with a twist was about a chance encounter that turns into love over a span of five days between a principled young girl, Reena Malhotra, and an impulsive young man, Madhav ‘Maddy’ Shastri. Things get complicated when a gentle and successful NRI Rajeev (Saif Ali Khan) comes from America to marry Reena.

Over time, the film’s songs and one liners have captured the imagination of the youth and are often used on social media platforms and in memes as conversational reference points. We share some of our absolute favourites:

‘Ek Ladki Dekhi Bilkul Bijli Ki Tarah… One Flash… Ek Chamak Aur Mein Apna Dil Kho Baitha’

The meaning of love at first sight is contained in these lines spoken by Maddy after catching a glimpse of Reena in the rainy night. The eccentric among us may not believe in magic, but the film hints at some mysterious force that drives two strangers towards each other. And of course, the film’s huge fan following has also started believing in this magic.

‘Kuch Mulakatein Yaadein Chhod Jaati Hai Aur Kuchh Vade’

In filmy parlance, a ‘mulkat’ is a loaded word and can lead to all kinds of complications or just plain love. A very special ‘Mulkat’ in this film leaves behind a treasure trove of beautiful memories and leads to promises that are sought to be fulfilled against all odds.

‘Saccha Pyar Kabhi Khali Haath Wapas Nahin Aata Hai’

OK, this might sound a little nave to many of us, but is it really? After all, what is life without the belief that everything will work out for all of us in the end? And if we love well, all will be well? The film definitely gives this feel-good message and that is probably why it is loved so much.

‘Jab Kisi Ladki Se Pyar Ho Jata Hai Na… Toh Dil Ke Channel Per Bas Ek Hi Program Chalta Hai… Just Mohabbat’

In this age of lack of attention and too many tabs left open in our heads and laptops, single-minded love can be a bit of a stretch, but RHTDM, still oozes a romance that takes the place of a whole heart and never. The song goes on like a never ending song. And that brings us to the songs of the movie? When was the last time you heard a half melodious voice like ‘Zara Zara’?

‘Bus Ab Ek Hi Tamanna Hai… Rehna Hai Uske Dil Mein’

Speaking of single-minded love, this line probably sums it up best and presents us with a love-loving protagonist who just wants to be in the heart of his beloved. In a world where romance is considered old-fashioned, RHTDM is proof that true love never gets old.
