20 Years of Hero: 8 Lesser Known Facts About Rani Mukerji’s Blockbuster Film Anil Kapoor

20 years ago S Shankar decided to step into Bollywood With a full political drama. He pursued his desire to remake one of his successful films, Mudhalvan (1999). Nayak stars Anil Kapoor as a television cameraman and reporter who works for a news channel. He usually takes on the chief minister played by Amrish Puri with wide-eyed menacing. Anil’s character accepts a one-day challenge gig as chief minister. What unfolds later forms the rest of the plot of the film. How he ends CM’s suffering and all related political corruption is a must watch movie.

The highlights of the film are the storyline, impressive performances by the leads, compelling storyline and difficult dialogues. The makers ensure that it draws on the religiosity of the middle class and hence the cult following of the hero. As the film completes 20 years of its release, let us recap some interesting facts that you might not have known about it:

A huge set was built for the television studio and more than 700 TV sets, cameras and a large screen were installed to make it look real. The climax scene of the film shows the studio being vandalized by CM’s henchmen. The whole scene was surreal and every instrument on the set was actually broken into pieces.

The release of the film was delayed by two weeks due to technical reasons. Shankar wanted his first full Hindi film to be a better product.

-Shankar approached Aamir Khan and then Shahrukh Khan to play the lead role. However, the communication gap with Aamir did not materialize the plan. Shah Rukh was playing a similar role in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, so he eventually turned down Shankar’s offer. After his passing, Anil Kapoor tried to persuade the filmmaker to cast him and thus became the final choice.

-The hero showed a famous 3D fight scene in the junkyard, in which Anil was dropped in the water. The actor took six-seven months of rigorous training to shoot this scene.

Anil’s character was named after Rajinikanth’s real name Shivajirao Gaekwad. The Tamil film, Mudhalvan was actually written keeping the superstar in mind. However, he was not ready to take up the role. Shankar decided to name the main character in the Hindi remake.

The riot scenes shown in Nayak were filmed on different days and on different occasions.

-For an action scene, Anil was asked to shave off his body hair as he had to take off his shirt for the shot. The actor told Shankar that he is not comfortable showing his bare body in front of the camera. To which the director insisted that considering the importance of the shot in the plot, he would be ready to change the hero but not the sequence.

Rani Mukerji played the lead role as Manjari, the village belle. This role was played by Manisha Koirala in Mudhalvan.

Shankar went to Rani instead of Manisha to complete Manjari’s part as he wanted with some bubbly image. He cast Manisha in the Tamil version as she was less visible in the south industry at that time. However, he wanted Rani to portray the role in her own way.
