South African spinner Keshav Maharaj struck twice in the last minute to beat Bangladesh for 11 for 3 in their chase of 274 against the hosts in the first Test at Kingsmead on Sunday.

Bangladesh bowled out the home team for 204 in their second innings and lost Mahmudul (4), fellow opener Shadman Islam (0) and captain Mominul Haque (2) in a difficult final 20 minutes. Offspinner Harmer got Shadman caught at slip in the second over of the innings and left-arm spinner Maharaj sent Mahmudul and Mominul packing in the fifth over.

Bangladesh took nine for 88 in the last two sessions of the fourth day and bowled out South Africa for 204 in their second innings, when it looked like the home side was about to take an unassailable lead. But just as South Africa lost wickets quickly enough to change the tone of the match and lift Bangladesh’s hopes of a maiden Test win over the Proteas, Bangladesh’s batsmen slipped to look in favor of the home team early in their chase. .

Seamer Abadot Hossain (3/40) was their attacking choice, while off-spinner Mehdi Hasan Miraj (3/85) also joined the task. Home captain Dean Elgar (64) scored his second half-century in the match, but the next highest score was an unbeaten 39 from debutant Ryan Rickelton.

South Africa doesn’t have many regular players. Seamers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jensen plus top-order batsmen Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen all opted to play in the Indian Premier League in this two-match series.
