Mohinder Amarnath may have been the man of the match in the final of the 1983 World Cup final, but every moment of that tournament is special for him. Amarnath, on the 38th anniversary of India’s historic victory over the mighty West Indies in the final of the tournament, said it was a team effort that led India to the trophy.

“Everything was memorable. We all played as a team, we all played our part, whenever someone had to perform, he gave his best,” Amarnath told India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai.

Amarnath took a star turn with the ball, taking three wickets, including the final wicket of the game which sealed the deal for India. He said that everyone in the team has stepped into a few matches at some point or the other and that made him believe that by the time they reached the finals, they were as good as the West Indies.

“One person cannot win anything, be it Sandeep’s knock, Yashpal’s innings, Kapil’s innings, Roger Binny’s spell or Kirimani’s catch, it was all teamwork. We won that World Cup with our team. Every moment was memorable, to be honest, when we reached the final, we thought we were as good as West Indies.”

Kirti Azad, who was part of the team, said that The victory was a catalyst for India to become a superpower in cricket. “1983 basically made India a cricket superpower. We had the next World Cup coming up in India, followed by the commercialization of cricket in many ways. That was the move. We think we thank Kapil, India were pioneers in helping the U.S. to become a superpower, Azad said.
