16,000 people evacuated from Kabul airport in last 24 hours: Pentagon

The Pentagon said on Monday that nearly 16,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan via Kabul airport in the past 24 hours, as international airlift operations intensified ahead of the August 31 deadline.

Spokesman John Kirby said the number of people displaced from Afghanistan had risen to 42,000 since July, and that 37,000 people began an intense airlift operation since the Taliban moved to capture Kabul on August 14.
