State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao said on Saturday that a total of 16 incidents of post-poll violence were reported in Tripura following the February 16 assembly elections, in which 21 people were arrested.

Dinkarrao said a large number of 400 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed by the Union Home Ministry had gone to vote in Nagaland and Meghalaya, where assembly elections are due on February 27.

The CEO told the media, “A sizeable number of CAPFs are still in various parts of Tripura, which will remain in the state till the counting of votes on March 2, to prevent any post-poll violence.”

Dinkarrao said that in view of the post-poll violence, peace meetings were held in all the 23 subdivisions on Saturday.

Appealing to the people to maintain peace and harmony, the CEO said that strict action would be taken against anyone taking the law into their hands.

The official said only six incidents of violence were reported from different districts of the state on February 16, the day of polling.
