PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has received around 12 tenders for its ambitious Rs 363 crore mechanised road sweeping plan.
Under the project, sweeping will take place only on roads with a width of 18metres in the north and south halves of Pimpri Chinchwad limits, to be carried out over 670km on a seven-year contract.
The proposal, strongly opposed by the previously ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was approved by former municipal commissioner Rajesh Patil when he took over as the administrator in March this year.
PCMC additional commissioner Vikas Dhakane said, “As per Union government guidelines, every city with a population of over 10lakh must opt for mechanised sweeping. In the Swachh Bharat ranking as well, this facility has separate points. Indore city, which tops the ranking, also has this facility. Since we are aiming for an improved ranking and clean roads, it will help us achieve the target.”
When asked when the project will begin across the wide roads of the twin cities, Dhakane said he is unsure of the timeline, but added that it will be soon as the newly appointed civic commissioner Shekhar Singh will review the same and it will be launched accordingly.
