A total of 1,068 attacks have taken place against minorities from August 5 to 20 in Bangladesh after the resignation and exit of former PM Sheikh Hasina, according to the country’s leading newspaper, Prothom Alo. While sources in the Bangladesh government blamed the Hasina regime, Indian government sources said they wanted the attacks to “stop as soon as possible”.
The newspaper reported that the attacks took place in 49 districts. “Hindus were most attacked community in Bangladesh. Their houses, businesses and places of worship attacked in 49 districts and subdivisions. Most of the attacks were in Khulna districts of Bangladesh in southwestern division,” the newspaper reported.
Attacks were also launched on the Christian and Ahmadiyya Muslim community and on members of the ethnic minority. A statue of Mother Mary was damaged in the Nijpara Mission in Thakurgaon and threats and attempts were made to attack a number of missionary schools and colleges.
According to top sources in the Bangladesh government, “These are initial reports and Sheikh Hasina is responsible for this. After the new government came into the picture, we tried our best to contain and launched systemic investigations to look into case to case basis. We have tried our best to give confidence to the minorities so that we can move together in new journey.”
Meanwhile, top Indian government sources said it was similar to what was reported during the initial days. “The Bangladesh government should contain this as soon as possible. Hindus have lost everything in Bangladesh and are devastated. Singers, writer and even film stars ran away because of the attacks. As Prof Yunus is a renowned name, he should take initiative and ensure safety of these minorities, especially Hindus. This damage will destroy the rich culture of Bangladesh completely.”
