Surat: Out of 4,786 total posts of teachers in the Surat city’s 319 Nagar Prathmik Shikshan Samiti (NPSS) schools, 1,047 are vacant. The figures were released during the recent budget session of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC, A total of 1.65 lakh students study in NPSS schools in Diamond City.
SMC standing committee chairman Paresh Patel had recently announced allocation of Rs 90 crore for buildings of civic body-run schools during the presentation of the draft budget. He had also claimed that nearly 15,000 students had migrated from private schools to municipal schools due to better quality of education.
However, the quality of education is worrisome claimed Aam Aadmi Party’s Rakesh Hirpara who is a member of the NPSS. “SMC officials and elected members made huge claims of developments but over 1,000 posts of teachers are vacant. They did not allocate funds for it,” said Hirpara.
According to norms, a school should have 1 teacher per 35 students in class I to V and for class VI to VIII one teacher per 40 students.
“The municipal schools do not have drawing, music and physical training teachers. The existing PT teachers are assigned duties to teach other subjects,” claimed Hirpara.
“Not only teachers there is a shortage of non-teaching staff in most of the schools. The authorities need to recruit staff on these posts,” Hirpara added.
The SMC authorities are yet to come up with a plan to deal with the situation. “For class I to VIII at NPSS schools, the state government is supposed to make recruitment and we will raise the issue with them. We will find out some solution,” said Paresh Patel, chairman of the standing committee.
