‘100 people, 11 food items’: This MP wants law to ban guests at weddings

new Delhi: To prevent wastage of money during weddings, Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill on Wednesday asked the Center to bring in a law to limit the number of guests at wedding functions.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gill said lavish feasts served in wedding ceremonies should also be curbed, PTI reported.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Gill said that it is necessary to remove wastage of money during weddings.

To corroborate his point, Gill claimed that in some wedding ceremonies, 289 food items were served to the guests and the hosts paid up to Rs 2,500 per plate.

“The government should enact a law that limits the number of guests to 50-50 on behalf of the bride and groom and the number of food items served should not exceed 11,” Gill said.

Responding to Gill’s demand, Speaker Om Birla said the members should set an example to bring about change. “As MPs, as people’s representatives we start doing it, the country will follow it,” he said.

Gill further claimed that such a law was in force in Pakistan. Birla said, “It doesn’t require a law, but it needs a will.”

In Pakistan, a Supreme Court order allows only one dish at weddings and prohibits unnecessary decorations to prevent extravagance of Pakistani wedding ceremonies.

The Supreme Court has also banned fireworks and heavy lighting in wedding ceremonies. The court said only one main dish would be allowed in wedding ceremonies. Guests can be served curry, rice, naan, a type of salad and curd.
