10 women arrested for clashing with liquor shop workers in South Delhi

Ten people, all women, were arrested after a clash broke out between a group of women protesting the opening of a liquor shop and shop workers in south Delhi’s Tigri area, police said on Saturday. The incident happened before the opening of the shop at around 8.30 am on Thursday.

Police said the tussle started with a protest by a group of local women, who were apparently against the opening of a liquor shop in the area. Officials said that the police had already been brought to the spot after they came to know about the protest apart from the women employees deployed by the shop owner.

As their demonstration heated up, the protesters clashed with the women employees of the shop, they also beat up a male cop. The beat officer of the area, Head Constable Ranjit, got caught in the fight and his uniform was also torn by the mob, the official said.

The situation in the area was brought under control and the injured employees were treated at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, the official said. According to the police, a case was registered against 10 criminals, including 146 for rioting.

“Ten accused have been arrested in this case. The situation in the area is under control and adequate number of personnel have been deployed to avoid further tension,” said Benita Marie Jacker, deputy commissioner of police (south).
