1 killed, 13 others injured in shooting at Kroger supermarket outside Memphis

One person was killed and at least 13 injured in a shooting at a Kroger grocery store in a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, on Thursday afternoon.

Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said officers responded to reports of an active shooter at a supermarket in Collierville, a suburb about 30 miles east of downtown Memphis, just after 1:30 p.m. local time.

The suspect has died in what authorities believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The suspect shooter’s vehicle is in the parking lot and we are waiting for some additional equipment to arrive here to securely check the vehicle and some of its assets,” Lane said.

Lane said at least 12 were taken to local hospitals and one person went to the hospital for treatment. Some of the victims were taken to the Regional One Health Medical Center, Level 1 Trauma Centre. NBC affiliate WREG reported.

At least one person was killed in the shootout.

The extent of the injuries is not yet clear, although Lane described them as “serious”.

Officials are working with witnesses to understand what happened before the shooting and have no clue about the motive.

“There were many employees who were working,” Lane said. “We found people hiding in freezers and closed offices … They were doing what they were trained to do: run, hide, fight. And so, you know, I hate that we have to Had to do it here.”

Lane also addressed the photo of a man on the roof of the store that was circulating on social media, saying he could not officially deny that the man was yet the shooter, but was an employee. Had to take it off the roof.

“I was part of the team that pulled the Kroger employee off the top of the building,” Lane said. “So, it’s more than likely a Kroger employee who was working on the roof.”
