Disaster is raining from the sky in Himachal, the land of God. Due to this disaster, 20 people have lost their lives. The continuous rains for three days have destroyed government and private property worth about Rs 4,000 crore. Half of Himachal is in darkness due to breakdown of 4648 power transformers.

Due to heavy rains, 1321 roads including Chandigarh-Manali, Kalka-Shimla NH are closed due to landslides at many places. Two dozen bridges have been submerged in water. Due to this the transport system has been badly affected. The Bailey bridge at Ghandal on the Shimla-Dharamshala NH was also damaged by the landslide, after which the traffic on this bridge has been made one-way.

This road connects 10 districts of Himachal with the capital Shimla. If it is completely damaged, the contact of Lower Himachal with Shimla will be cut off. However, the administration has now made it one-way and diverted the traffic from the alternate route.

HRTC bus services suspended on 1008 routes

Bus services have been affected on more than 1500 routes across the state including 1008 bus routes of HRTC alone and private buses. As many as 452 buses of the corporation plying outside the state were stuck at various places due to rain. Due to stalling of more than 800 drinking water schemes and silt in the rivers, people are unable to get clean drinking water.

Chief Minister appealed to be careful

Due to heavy rains, small and big rivers and streams are in spate across the state. In view of this, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Sukhu has appealed to the public to be careful, not to go near overflowing rivers and drains and avoid traveling to landslide-prone high areas. There has been a waterlogging situation in the plains, while the situation is worrying due to landslides on the mountains. In Shimla district alone, 11 people have lost their lives due to the disaster caused by the landslide.

rain broke records

The rainfall so far has broken all previous records in July. Manali received 131.3 millimeters (MM) of rain on 9 July. Solan recorded 107, Rohru 185, Una 228.5 MM of rain. Ghumaihar Kangra recorded 166 MM and Nadaun 160.5 MM of rain, which is a record till now. Pachhad recorded 220.3 MM and Nayanadevi 198.4 MM, which are all-time records.

Similarly, Nahan recorded the highest rainfall of 131.2 mm since July 9, 2014. Kasauli has received maximum rainfall of 172MM since 1990, Dehra Gopipur 175.4MM after 2014, Kahu in Bilaspur 171.5MM after 2004, Barthi 148.6MM after 1982, Keylong 83.0MM after 1982.

Orange alert of rain even today

Director of Meteorological Center Shimla, Dr. Surendra Pal told that even today the orange alert of heavy rain continues throughout the day. The rains will continue in the state till July 15. He has appealed to the public to be careful.

More than 200 people rescued here and there

During the last 24 hours, rescue operation was carried out to evacuate more than 200 people stranded at different places in the state. 6 migrant laborers stranded on the banks of Beas in Kullu were safely rescued till 2 am. In Kullu’s Potato Ground itself, 20 to 22 people were rescued after eight hours of rescue till 7 in the morning.

In Kasol too, during the 14-hour rescue, two dozen people were safely evacuated. Three people were also trapped on the river bank in Sunni. They were also evacuated safely. 32 people from three families were trapped in the island at Bhagani Mehruwala in Paonta Sahib. On receiving the information late at around 2:30 am, SDM Paonta along with GS Cheema Rescue Team reached the spot and by 6.30 am everyone was safely rescued.
