The Calcutta High Court will also hear on July 12 the violence in the Bengal Panchayat elections.

The Calcutta High Court has reprimanded the State Election Commission over the violence that took place since July 8 during the West Bengal Panchayat elections. The Court has questioned the Commission that the High Court Registry has received more than 44 emails alleging violence. Why couldn’t you control these situations?

Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam told the accusers- “The first is blaming the other. The second is blaming someone else. Then what is the meaning of so many orders we had issued?”

Claim in status report – No illegality in withdrawal of nomination
The state government on Tuesday submitted a status report on election violence in the court, claiming that no illegality took place during the withdrawal of nominations, adding that the withdrawal process was videographed.

A day earlier, the court had sought a state report on the violence from the state government and security forces. Along with this, it was also instructed that FIR will be registered and videography of postmortem will have to be done.

Adhir Ranjan said in the petition – Murshidabad was devastated by violence
The High Court gave these instructions during the hearing on the petition of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. In which he said that Murshidabad has been devastated by violence. The poorest section of the society has been badly affected. Those who are seriously injured or die cannot even get their loved ones cremated.

Subsequently, the High Court had directed the state government to provide treatment and health facilities to the injured, and also to make arrangements for the last rites of the dead.

36 killed in election violence so far
Bengal witnessed 80.71% polling on July 8 amid incidents of violence and booth capturing. As of July 10, 36 people have died in election violence since the election schedule was revealed on June 8. At the same time, the counting of votes is going on for the Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad elections on Tuesday itself.

Following complaints of booth capturing, the Election Commission on Monday (July 10) conducted re-voting at 697 booths in 19 districts. Although 69.85% voting took place during this period and there was no major incident of violence.
