About ten thousand farmers were going to protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai by walking 200 kilometers to get their demands accepted.

Two days after talking to Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, representatives of farmers marching on foot from Nashik to Mumbai have called off the agitation. CPI leader and former MLA Jeeva Pandu Gavit who is leading this march said that farmers are now returning to their homes.

He said that the state government has assured to accept their demands. Tell that about ten thousand farmers were going to demonstrate at Azad Maidan in Mumbai by walking 200 kilometers to get their demands accepted. Their main demands are rights on land, MSP on onions and loan waiver. Apart from the farmers, unorganized workers, ASHA workers and members of the tribal community also participated in this march.

CM Shinde said – the situation worsened due to high production of onions
CM Eknath Shinde said that there was a lot of production of onion in Maharashtra, then the farmers got worried due to its very low price. The farmers were also demanding steps to arrest the fall in prices of soyabean, cotton and arhar and immediate relief for crops damaged by unseasonal rains. The marchers were also demanding implementation of the old pension scheme for state government employees who joined service after 2005.

There was a discussion with the farmers on their 14 demands.
Eknath Shinde said he held talks with farmers’ representatives on 14 points, including forest rights, encroachment of forest land, transfer of land from temple trusts and grazing grounds to farmers for cultivation.

According to reports, CM Shinde appealed to the farmers to withdraw their long march and said that the decisions taken would be implemented immediately. He said that onion growers who were affected due to low prices and damage caused by unseasonal rains would be paid Rs 350 per quintal.

Farmers had come out on the march with these demands.

Nashik was the third such movement
This was the third such movement in Nashik. Earlier in 2018 and 2019 also farmers have taken out foot march. Both the times the government had stopped the agitation by assuring to fulfill the demands. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had called the leaders of the farmers for talks in Mantralaya on Tuesday, but bypassing it, the farmers went on foot march.
