The Law Commission of the country issued a notification on June 14 seeking suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Till Thursday, more than 60 lakh suggestions were received on this. Never before has such a large number of opinions been received on any law or matter. AI tools will be used to weed out these suggestions.

The time for giving public suggestions and objections on the process of making UCC has now been extended till July 28. Earlier its last date was on Thursday. With the extension of the deadline for opinion polls, there is doubt over the introduction of the UCC bill in the monsoon session of Parliament starting from July 20.

Over 90% of suggestions received by e-mail
After receiving such a large number of suggestions, the major challenge is scrutiny of the replies. Identical suggestions will be weeded out. According to sources, since more than 90 percent of the suggestions are received by email, they will be easily sorted by AI tools. Separate categories are being created for written suggestions other than emails. Suggestions received in languages other than English-Hindi will be translated. Earlier in 2018, 76 thousand suggestions were received on UCC.

Maximum suggestions and objections received from Muslim organizations
Most of the objections and suggestions regarding UCC have come from Muslim organizations. Out of these, those suggestions which advocate not to bring UCC will be discarded. In the next one month, reports of more and more organizations, institutions, non-governmental bodies, expert centers will be called for face-to-face hearing.

According to sources, the wording of thousands of suggestions match each other exactly. Obviously these votes have been sent at someone’s behest.

Letters from a large number of victims were received
A large number of victims have sent their stories in writing to the Commission. In these, women from different religions have reported that they face obstacles in personal laws in getting divorce, sharing of property and custody of children.

Suggestions have also come from abroad on UCC. Most of these have been found in Canada, Britain and Gulf countries. The commission will also consider these on merit. The commission wants to complete the process of hearing and settlement on these in the next 40-50 days. However, the basic structure of the UCC has already been prepared before inviting suggestions. In these, such standards have been kept on which there will be no compromise.
