When Governor Fagu Chauhan gave his speech in Hindi, the MLAs of four parties including Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) got angry. The legislators walked out of the House. Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma tried to convince him, but even then he did not agree.

Before the walkout, there was a scuffle between VPP MLA Ardent Miller Basaivamoit and Chief Minister Sangma. Basaivamoit said that Meghalaya is not a Hindi-speaking state, so the Governor’s speech in Hindi was against the sentiments of the people. The central government cannot impose Hindi on the people of the state. The official language of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is English and the local languages ​​are Khasi and Garo.

MLA Basaivamoit said that what the Governor speaks in Hindi, we do not understand anything. That’s why we don’t want to be a part of this proceedings. Those who do not have any problem can continue sitting in the House.

In Meghalaya, NPP, UDP and BJP have formed government together. On February 27, voting was held on 59 seats in the assembly. Election results were announced on 2 March, in which the NPP emerged as the single largest party by winning 26 seats. Whereas, UDP won 11 seats. Congress and TMC got 5-5 seats in their account. Whereas, BJP won 2 seats.

Appealing to PM Narendra Modi, said that the efforts to make Hindi compulsory should be abandoned and the integrity of the country should be maintained.
