Interview of Biren Singh…

1. Didn’t decide to resign after seeing public support
I didn’t take the decision to resign because I saw public support. Hundreds of people had gathered outside my house on Friday. I was earlier unhappy that the Central and State Governments were doing what they could. Despite this, some people were burning effigies, attacking BJP offices. People supported and what I felt that I had reposed trust among the public, was wrong.

2. If people said resign, I would have given
A leader cannot remain a leader without the support of the people. People’s support is what makes one a leader. I felt good when I came outside the CM residence. People told me not to resign. If he had said that I have to resign, I would have given it. If he says that he does not want to give, he does not give.

3. Few days ago I was abused in the market
Thought of resigning because I saw effigies of Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah being burnt. I saw that some people are trying to attack BJP offices. Looking at what the Center has done for Manipur and what we have done for Manipur in the last 5-6 years, a question arose in my mind whether we have lost the trust of the people. I felt bad while thinking this. A few days ago a group abused me in the market. I didn’t like it and that’s why I thought of resigning.

4. I am also shocked to see the violence in Manipur
I am also surprised as to why there is violence in Manipur. The government has not yet made any recommendation whether the Meitei community should be included or not included in the Schedule Tribe list. For this everyone has to agree. The High Court had asked us about this. We haven’t sent any recommendations yet. There is still 4 weeks to go. I do not understand the reason for the violence. This reason can be given by the same organization, which took out a rally that Meitei should not be included in the schedule tribe. He will have the answer.

5. We are eating the poisonous fruit whose seeds others have sown
Manipur is a neighbor of Myanmar. China is also close. There is no guard on the 398 km border. There are security forces, but they cannot be deployed over such a large area. Looking at the present situation, it can be said that violence has been planned. The reason for this has not been revealed yet. Where is this problem coming from? This is not today’s problem. Congress is accusing us. But we are eating the same poisonous fruits, the seeds of which have been sown by these people. The whole world knows that it is a mistake.

Know in 4 points what is the reason for Manipur violence…

The population of Manipur is about 38 lakhs. There are three major communities here – Meitei, Naga and Kuki. Meitais are mostly Hindus. The Nga-Kuki follow Christianity. Belongs to ST category. Their population is about 50%. The Meitei community is dominant in the Imphal Valley, which covers about 10% of the state’s area. The population of Naga-Kuki is about 34 percent. These people live in about 90% of the state’s area.

How the controversy started: The Meitei community is demanding that they too be given tribe status. The community petitioned the Manipur High Court for this. The community argued that Manipur had merged with India in 1949. Before that they had got the status of tribe only. After this, the High Court recommended to the state government that Meitei be included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

What is Meitei’s argument: The Meitei tribe believe that years ago their kings called Kukis from Myanmar to fight a war. After that they became permanent residents. These people cut the forest for employment and started cultivating opium. This has made Manipur a triangle of drug smuggling. All this is happening openly. He formed an arms group to fight the Naga people.

Why the Naga-Kukis are in opposition: The remaining two tribes are against giving reservation to the Meitei community. They say that 40 of the state’s 60 assembly seats are already in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, by getting reservation for Meitei in the ST category, their rights will be divided.

What are political equations: Out of 60 MLAs of Manipur, 40 MLAs are Meitei and 20 MLAs are from Naga-Kuki tribe. So far only two out of 12 CMs have been from the tribe.
