Along with repeating the victory in Tripura for the BJP, saving power through alliances in Nagaland and Meghalaya will prove to be a big challenge. The election results of 180 seats in the three states will also tell the political mood of the Northeast for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It will not be easy for the BJP to save its house in Tripura.
The BJP, the junior partner of the ruling coalition in Nagaland so far, would like to increase its stature. On the other hand, in Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma’s NPP and BJP have indicated a post-poll alliance. Trinamool’s Mukul Sangma will make the contest interesting.
BJP has played a bet by changing the CM in Tripura
The BJP came to power in Tripura on the issue of Bangladeshi infiltrators and a united Hindu vote bank. Then in May 2022, to deal with anti-incumbency, BJP removed CM Biplab Deb and handed over the post of CM to Manik Saha. In Tripura BJP will have to increase vote share in this election.
In 2018, BJP got 36 seats in Tripura.
On the other hand, the Congress and the Left are in the process of forming an alliance. Pradyut Dev Barman’s Tipra Motha Party and Adivasi Adhikar Party IPFT are also in the fray. In the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP won 36 of the 60 seats in Tripura. Whereas, CPM got 16 seats and IPFT got 8 seats.
BJP’s national executive meeting was held in Delhi on 16 and 17 January. In this, it was decided that in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tripura, the party would contest elections under the leadership of the current chief minister. It has also been decided in the meeting that the head of the organization must be taken into confidence before any major decision is taken by the government.
CM will not be changed in election states
A senior BJP leader says that the CM of the poll-bound states or the leader of the opposition will not be changed, but the CM can change his cabinet and the party president his team. In states like Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, where the BJP is in the opposition, a decision will be taken at least six months before the election whether to declare the face of the CM and contest the elections under collective leadership. After the election results of Tripura and Karnataka assembly, the discussion on the CM face can start.
Results will come on March 2 in all three states
Let us tell you that on January 18, the Election Commission announced the dates for the assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya. Voting will be held in Tripura on 16 February while in Nagaland and Meghalaya on 27 February. Counting of votes will be held in all the three states on March 2.
