These days in Kerala, under the Kutumbashree scheme, an oath is being administered to give equal rights to the son and daughter in the father’s property. Muslim organizations are opposing the state government regarding this. Clerics say that in Muslim society, women are entitled to one-fourth of the father’s property. Giving them the same rights as boys is against Sharia law.

Government changing rules due to protest
Seeing the anti-Muslim tone of the organizations, the leftist government of Kerala has started laxity in the essentiality of the scheme. About 20 lakh people are associated with the Kutumbshree scheme in the state. Under this, women empowerment is done with the aim of removing poverty. State BJP state president K. Surendran alleges that the government is changing decisions under pressure from Muslim organizations.

Kerala’s largest Muslim organization objected to the oath
Controversy arose over the oath after Nasar Faizi Kodatayi, leader of Kerala’s largest Muslim organization All Kerala Jamayatul Kutba Committee (SJIQC), objected. Kodatayi said that the daughter’s right in father’s property is un-Islamic. Jamaat-e-Islami and Kerala Nadwatul Mujahideen had earlier raised objections to some part of the oath, but later kept quiet.

Christian organizations supported the oath
On the other hand, the Christian organization Christian Association for Social Change has supported the Kutumbshree oath. Executive Director of Kutumbshree Zafar Malik clarified that the oath campaign is going on. So far three lakh people have taken the oath of family. By December 31, more families can also take oath.

Government backtracks even on gender neutral dress in schools
The Kerala government had recently announced the implementation of gender neutral dress in schools. But, due to the opposition of Muslim organizations, the government has stopped the plan to implement it. The Left government is worried that the Congress-led UDF could tap into the Muslim vote bank through this issue.
