The petitioner had filed a petition in the court demanding the removal of the published news on print and social media.

The Delhi High Court on Friday directed some media houses, including Twitter and Google, to block such news and video links. In which a woman is being forced to convert by a Muslim man.

Justice Pratibha M Singh while passing this order said that- this is a serious danger, because people comment on such news on social media in different ways. With this, the court issued notices to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), Press Council of India (PCI), News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) and Google, Twitter. Apart from this, the court has also sent notices to some news channels.

Understand on which matter the court gave this direction
Delhi High Court has given this direction while hearing the case of petitioner Azmat Ali Khan. On April 19, a woman resident of Delhi had leveled an allegation of forced conversion against Ajmat. After complaining to the police, an FIR was also registered against Ajmat. The news and videos related to all these cases were published on print media and social media, demanding the removal of which Ajmat filed a petition in the court.

What did the court say while issuing the order?

  • The news of conversion is a serious threat as people comment on such news on social media. which may give rise to disputes.
  • It is a question of the safety of the petitioner. If (the channel) doesn’t block it, let the social media platforms block it. My instructions are clear. Everyone has to block it.
  • The links should be immediately blocked from view by outside public before the date of next hearing. If this does not happen, action will be taken for disobeying the order.
