On the complaint of female farmer Dharini, a case of theft has been registered in Halebidu police station.

Dharini said that the theft took place when the price of tomatoes was above Rs 120 per kg and Dharini was preparing to harvest the crop and take it to the Bengaluru market.

Dharini told that she had grown tomato crop by taking a loan.

According to the complainant Dharini, she had suffered a loss in the bean crop, after which she had taken a loan to grow tomatoes. Coincidentally the crop was good, the prices were also high.

Halebidu police said- We had heard about the theft of betel nut and other commercial crops, but never heard that someone stole tomatoes. This is the first time that such a case has been registered in our police station. Dharini’s son has also requested the state government for compensation.

Tomato prices are skyrocketing in Karnataka too

Actually Dharini along with her family had grown tomatoes on two acres of land. Like the rest of the states, in Karnataka too, tomato prices have increased very sharply in the past. Tomato prices in Bangalore are in the range of Rs 101 to Rs 121 per kg.

The high prices have been attributed to sudden rise in temperature in March and April, which led to pest attack on tomato crops, leading to reduction in yield and higher market rates.
