Many schools of Kolkata Municipality are in a dilapidated condition. Many schools have very few students, and even if there are students, many school buildings are in a dilapidated condition. In this situation, the Kolkata Municipality decided to merge all those schools with other schools. The Kolkata Municipality has decided to close 28 such schools and merge them with nearby schools. In the first phase, 18 schools will be merged, whose notification has been issued by the municipality yesterday.
“This decision has been taken to further improve the quality of municipal schools and for the benefit of the students,” the notification said. As mentioned in the notice, the work required for the shifting of schools like supply of school supplies, documents, mid-day meal facility, shifting of teaching and non-teaching staff will be completed by March 18. Some schools with fewer students will be matched against other schools. Teachers will be allocated as per the requirement. Municipal Councilor (Education) Sandipan Saha said, ‘The main objective of the municipality is better utilization of schools. After the amalgamation of these schools, we will have enough teachers which we can use wherever we are.
The municipality has identified that some schools operate in two shifts in the same building. The students in these schools are less but the number of teachers is equal for both the shifts. In this case both the shifts will be doubled. The education department will also prepare a new time table for the schools. The new schedule will be decided after talking to the parents, especially in those schools where two shifts are running.
Apart from this, the list also includes some schools which are running on rented properties. Many of these buildings are under litigation or are not in good condition. Based on these factors, the municipal authorities have identified 28 schools out of 242 schools run by the municipality, where around 16,000 students from Kolkata study in these schools. Municipalities generally have fixed costs to run the schools. But despite having a school, due to less number of students, the expenditure of Kolkata Municipality is not reducing. In view of this, if those schools are compared with comparatively good schools, then the officials of the Municipal Corporation feel that the unnecessary expenditure will be reduced a bit.
