Only women can be there in the Republic Day parade to be held on 26 January 2024. Even the contingents of bands participating in the parade may have women. In fact, the Ministry of Defense has written a letter in this regard to the military forces and other government departments participating in the parade. Currently, some of the contingents marching in the parade consist only of men.
In the letter of the Ministry of Defense, it has been said that only women should be included in the march past squad and their associated bands and tableaux. For this, it has been asked to start preparations and inform the Defense Ministry from time to time about the progress in this direction.

The decision to increase the participation of women in the Republic Day parade was taken in the ‘D-briefing meeting’ held on February 7. The meeting, chaired by Defense Secretary Giridhar Armane, was attended by senior representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education. After deliberations, it has been decided that the contingents (marching and bands), tableaux and other displays during the parade on the line of duty in the Republic Day Parade 2024 will have only women participants.
About a month after the meeting, the Defense Ministry issued a letter to the participating forces, ministries and departments. Over the years, women contingents and women officers have participated along with men in the annual parade at Rajpath (now Karti Path).
Women have been leading the contingents involved in the Republic Day parade.
Nari Shakti was the theme in the 2023 parade
India showcased its military might and vibrant cultural heritage this year during the 74th Republic Day Parade held on 26 January 2023. ‘Women power’ was the main theme in the tableaux of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Tripura in the parade.
Air force contingent led by woman officer
The marching contingent of 144 air warriors of the Indian Air Force was led by a woman officer. There were three additional male officers in the 2023 parade, which was the first Republic Day celebration held at the ceremonial boulevard since the Central Vista’s renovation and renaming it Rajat.

Republic Day Parade being held since 1950
The first Republic Day celebration was held in 1950 at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium). Since 1951, the ceremonial parade has been taking place at Rajpath. Various states and union territories besides many departments and ministries display culture and heritage along with other themes through colorful tableaux every year. In recent years the government has been pushing for a greater role for women in the Armed Forces. For the first time, the Indian Army has recently inducted five women officers in its artillery regiment.
