In a disturbing report, an army official and his wife have been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault and murder of their minor adopted daughter in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, the police said on Tuesday.

According to a NDTV report, the woman, who is the prime accused’s wife was the aunt of the 11-year-old victim and had taken her in after her mother’s death as her father abandoned her. Her aunt attempted to cover up the crime when the girl informed her about the crime.

The accused, who holds a Subedar position in the Army and was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, had purportedly engaged in the sexual abuse upon returning home for a month-long vacation, the publication reported.

The crime came to light on March 22 when the couple took the dead child to a government hospital in Madurai, claiming that they had found her unconscious. However, when the post-mortem revealed sexual, the hospital authorities informed the police.

Soon after the incident was reported, the Oomachikumal police launched an investigation into the matter and the couple was arrested two days after questioning. According to police, the man smothered the girl to death.

The accused have been charged with murder under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The girl’s mother had died when she was an infant, and she and her sibling had later been abandoned by their father. She was raised by her aunt and her Armyman uncle since then, said an official.
